Did the land beneath Chai Wan Park always offer such tranquility? No. Chai Wan Park, a sprawling 6.55-hectare green space, wasn’t always a place for leisurely strolls and model boat races. Before the laughter of children echoed through its playgrounds and the gentle splash of the cascade waterfall filled the air, this land held a different purpose. Established in 1929, this area was once the Chaiwan Campsite of the Boy Scouts Association. Imagine young scouts pitching tents where the lily pond now sits, their campfire stories replacing the quiet murmur of the fountains. The hill that once dominated this area was even affectionately nicknamed Tung Kwan Shan, or Scout Hill, in Cantonese. In 1970, progress began to reshape Chai Wan. The government reclaimed the campsite land for development, and the scouts relocated to Tai Tam. Scout Hill, a landmark for so many, was demolished in the 1980s. The coastline itself was reshaped, making way for the park we see today. Chai Wan Park officially opened on April 21, 1993. But remnants of the past still linger. Near the Cascade Waterfall Pavilion, two cannons stand silent guard. These weren’t part of the original scout camp, but relics of a different era. Unearthed during seabed excavations in Chai Wan in 1973, they are believed to be discarded artillery from a nearby barracks. They offer a glimpse into a time when this tranquil space may have echoed with different sounds altogether. Today, Chai Wan Park provides a welcome escape from the bustling city. Divided by the Island Eastern Corridor, the park boasts a variety of attractions. From the vibrant terrace garden to the serene knoll garden, from the children’s playground to the basketball and tennis courts, there’s something for everyone. As you wander through Chai Wan Park, consider the layers of history beneath your feet. From scout camp to urban park, this land has adapted and evolved, reflecting the ever-changing landscape of Hong Kong.
