Chai Wan Muslim Cemetery is more than graves. It is a testament to Hong Kong’s diverse cultural tapestry. It reflects the rich heritage of its Muslim community. Established in 1963 the Chai Wan Muslim Cemetery provides a final resting place.
Interestingly this cemetery emerged because of another. The government provided this land after resuming a cemetery and mosque in Ho Man Tin in 1963. This act highlights the government’s commitment to accommodating the religious needs of its people.

Also of note is the adjacent Masjid. The government built a small mosque which opened on August 4, 1963. It was primarily for offering Janazah prayers. Initially, regular prayers were not held here. It was an isolated area. Only a caretaker lived nearby.
As more Muslim families settled in Chai Wan daily prayers began at the Masjid. The Trustees renovated the building in 2005. Air conditioning was installed in the main prayer hall. This shows the community’s dedication to providing a comfortable space for worship.
The Chai Wan Muslim Cemetery stands as a Grade 3 historic site. The Advisory Board of Antiques and Monuments Office designated it on May 17 2010. This recognition underscores the cemetery’s cultural and historical significance.
Both the Happy Valley Muslim Cemetery and the Chai Wan Muslim Cemetery are managed by the Incorporated Trustees of the Islamic Community Fund of Hong Kong. The Trustees ensure the maintenance and upkeep of both cemeteries. This demonstrates their commitment to preserving these sacred spaces.
The maintenance includes keeping pathways clean. It also includes repairing slopes and clearing vegetation. The Trustees fund this work through burial fees. The Chai Wan Muslim Cemetery offers a tranquil space. It allows us to remember and honor the departed.
