In 1963, a unique trade unfolded in Hong Kong. A cemetery and small mosque in Ho Man Tin were resumed by the government. In return, the British Hong Kong government granted land in Cape Collinson and built a new mosque. This became the Chai Wan Mosque, opening its doors on August 4, 1963. Chai Wan Mosque initially served primarily as a place for funeral prayers. Its location in the isolated Cape Collinson area meant few Muslims lived nearby, except a lone caretaker. The mosque stood quiet, its purpose specific and solemn. As Chai Wan began to attract more Muslim families, the mosque’s role evolved. It transitioned from a place solely for funeral rites to a hub for daily prayers. The isolation that once defined it became a haven for a growing community. The Incorporated Trustees of the Islamic Community Fund of Hong Kong recognized this transformation. They renovated the entire building in 2005, adding air conditioning to the main prayer hall. This modernization reflected the Chai Wan Mosque’s growing importance. The Chai Wan Mosque’s significance extended beyond its function as a prayer space. Its unique history, born from a land exchange, symbolized a community’s resilience and adaptation. In 2010, the Advisory Board of Antiquities and Monuments Office acknowledged this, designating the Chai Wan Mosque as a Grade III historic building. The Chai Wan Mosque stands as a testament to Hong Kong’s Muslim community. It tells a story of exchange, evolution, and ultimately, a place of prayer finding its purpose within a growing community. The luxurious white marble of its three prayer halls and the open space for gatherings beckon. They invite visitors to experience the tranquility and history within the walls of the Chai Wan Mosque.
