Chad Silver, a name synonymous with passion and skill on the ice. He was a Swiss-Canadian hockey player who captivated audiences with his powerful presence. Born in Brandon, Manitoba, Canada, in 1969, Silver’s journey led him to Switzerland, where he became a beloved figure in the hockey world.
The Chad Silver statue isn’t just a cold, unfeeling piece of metal. It represents a life cut short, a talent extinguished too soon. Silver’s career began in the Western Hockey League, playing for the Brandon Wheat Kings and then the Regina Pats. His Swiss heritage drew him to the Swiss National League, where he played for several teams, including HC Sierre, Fribourg-Gottéron, EV Zug, SC Herisau, and finally, the ZSC Lions. He even played for the Swiss national team in 1993-94.
Silver’s time with the ZSC Lions was tragically brief. On December 3, 1998, he failed to show up for practice. Teammates, concerned for his well-being, went to his apartment and found him. He had died of heart failure. The news sent shockwaves through the hockey community and the city of Zurich. Over 1,500 people attended his memorial service at Zurich’s Paulus Church. His number 23 jersey was retired by the ZSC Lions, a testament to the impact he made on the team and the city. The statue, created by artist Kurt Laurenz Metzler, originally stood outside the Hallenstadion, the Lions’ former home. It features his nickname, “Sly,” and his number, 23, forever frozen in time. When the team moved to the new Swiss Life Arena in 2023, the statue moved too, ensuring that Silver’s memory lives on in the hearts of fans and players alike.
