Gazing upon the seemingly unassuming Červenomlýnský potok, could you ever guess its hidden depths? This tranquil stream, a vital part of Prague’s intricate water network, holds tales of industry, nature, and the ever-changing urban landscape. Červenomlýnský potok is not just a waterway. It’s a thread woven through the fabric of Prague’s history. Červenomlýnský potok is actually the upper part of the Mratínský potok. It begins its journey in Čáblice and flows approximately 5 kilometers before joining the Třeboradický potok in Mírovice. As we stand here, we’re witnessing a small part of a larger story, a story shaped by the flow of water and the passage of time. The stream’s journey begins humbly, springing from several sources in the gardens of northern Čáblice. The local community carefully tends to these beginnings, recognizing the importance of Červenomlýnský potok. Even in these early stages, the stream supports life. Two natural ponds within the gardens provide a haven for birds and mammals. From there, the stream continues eastward, its path carved artificially, a testament to human intervention in the natural world. Before reaching the shopping center and Čakovice sugar factory, Červenomlýnský potok once flowed freely, creating a marshy area teeming with life. This vibrant ecosystem is remembered in the name of a local street, “Na Blatech,” meaning “In the Marshes.” Today, near the bustling commercial areas, the stream bed is largely concreted and deeply embedded, a stark contrast to its more natural origins. Further along its course, Červenomlýnský potok feeds the Čakovice and Zámecký ponds in Zámecký Park, nourishing the roots of ancient white poplars that line its banks. Here, the stream reclaims a semblance of its natural character, creating a habitat for various organisms. Beyond Prague’s borders, the stream widens, its banks unconcreted, allowing for natural flooding and a return to a wilder state. Červenomlýnský potok also has a connection to Prague’s milling history. Along its course are remnants of this past. The Red Mill (Červený mlýn) in Čáblice, which lends its name to the stream, still stands. The White Mill (Bílý mlýn) in Čakovice, however, has vanished, leaving only its name in the street address. Further downstream, the Míškovice Mill still exists, a reminder of the stream’s importance to local industry. The Červenomlýnský potok, from its humble beginnings to its confluence with the Třeboradický potok, is more than just a stream. It’s a living testament to the interplay of nature and human activity. It’s a reminder that even in the heart of a bustling city, the rhythms of the natural world continue to shape our lives.
