“Isn’t it impressive?” whispered a woman to her companion, gesturing towards the Centrum Luterańskie. “Such a modern structure amidst Warsaw’s historic charm.” The Centrum Luterańskie stands as a testament to the enduring presence of the Lutheran Church in Poland. It’s not just a building. It’s the heart of the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Poland. This complex at Miodowa 21 houses the church’s highest authorities. The Centrum Luterańskie’s history is deeply intertwined with the city’s resilience. The site once held a grand mansion belonging to Baron Lesser. This mansion, sadly, was destroyed during the tumultuous days of September 1939. From the ashes of war, a new vision arose. Construction of the Centrum Luterańskie began in 1963. A key moment came on April 25, 1965, with the laying of the foundation stone. By September 1965, the residential section was ready. This section is adjacent to the Archbishop’s House at Miodowa 17/19. The administrative building followed in 1968, becoming home to the Zwiastun publishing house and the Consistory. The building’s dedication took place on September 5, 1968. Another significant milestone was reached on October 17, 1970. The building for the Christian Theological Academy was consecrated. This event coincided with the 400th anniversary of the Sandomierz Agreement. Bishop Andrzej Wantuła announced the construction cost of 14 million złoty. Remarkably, half of this sum came from Lutherans worldwide, from Sweden and the USA to Australia and New Zealand. Other contributors included the Lutheran World Federation, the World Council of Churches, and the Swiss Churches Aid Committee. The 1990s saw further expansion with the addition of a residential and conference wing on Schillera Street, completed in 1997. In 2007, the main building underwent a transformation, including the addition of another floor. Bishop Janusz Jagucki consecrated the renovated building on September 22, 2007. Until 2018, the Centrum Luterańskie also housed the Christian Theological Academy. The academy has since moved to a new location on Broniewskiego Street. The Centrum Luterańskie is a modernist marvel comprised of three interconnected sections. The main building along Miodowa Street has five floors, housing offices, the Synod Hall named after Bishop Andrzej Wantuła, and more. A three-story administrative and educational section stands along Schillera Street, connected to a three-story residential and conference wing. The Synod Hall is a versatile space, hosting synod meetings, Lutheran and ecumenical services. It even served as the main hall for the Christian Theological Academy. Today, the Warsaw International Church holds regular services within its walls. Adjacent to the complex is a residential building connected to the property at Miodowa 17/19. The Centrum Luterańskie isn’t just a place of administration. It’s a vibrant hub where the Lutheran community connects, learns, and celebrates their faith.
