This unassuming building on Przyczółkowa Street houses the heart of Poland’s automated road traffic surveillance. It’s a critical component of the Główny Inspektorat Transportu Drogowego GITD. Think of CANARD as the silent guardian of Poland’s roads. It monitors speeding and red-light running. It also oversees the sophisticated system of section control speed cameras.
CANARD’s work is far-reaching. In 2024 alone their 459 speed cameras and other devices recorded 719158 violations. The most active camera was located in Ławidnik Lubelskie Voivodeship. It caught an astounding 21044 offenses. This underscores the sheer volume of traffic violations across the nation. Many of these were caught by section control cameras which monitored speed across longer stretches of highway. One such camera system between Kostomłoty and Kąty Wrocławskie on the A4 highway registered 80211 violations. The sheer scale of these numbers speaks volumes about the challenges of road safety in Poland.
CANARD doesn’t just monitor speed. They also monitor red-light violations. In 2024 their systems caught 60509 cases of drivers running red lights. The highest number was in Łódź. The system there recorded 6833 violations. These weren’t just at intersections. CANARD also monitors railway crossings. The highest number of violations at railway crossings was recorded in Warsaw. It recorded 4995 violations. These numbers paint a clear picture of driver behavior.
CANARD is constantly evolving. They are currently expanding their network of cameras and systems. This expansion is funded by the Krajowy Plan Odbudowy. The project includes 70 new speed cameras 43 new section control systems and several red light cameras at intersections and railway crossings. The aim is to improve safety on Polish roads. The work will continue until mid-2026. By then CANARD will have even more eyes on the road. Their goal remains simple but crucial to enhance road safety across the country.
