“Lost in thought?” a voice startled me. I blinked, turning to see a fellow visitor admiring the Centro de Difusão Internacional. The CDI, as the locals call it, is more than just a building. It’s a story waiting to be told. The University of São Paulo (USP), known worldwide, needed a central hub for international relations. So, in 2015, the CDI was born. Its architects, Onze arquitetura, designed a space that blended seamlessly with the lush greenery of the USP campus. Two sleek, laminar buildings, one tilted slightly to preserve the existing trees, form the core of the CDI. A grand, sculptural staircase leads visitors to a metallic portico, framing the complex. Connecting the two buildings is a walkway. This walkway isn’t just a bridge, but a sculpted path winding through the trees. It creates spaces for relaxation and contemplation. The design is called “bloco-padrão,” or standard block. It’s modular and flexible. USP intended to replicate it for future projects with diverse uses. The CDI’s structure uses a 1.25m x 1.25m module. Circular concrete pillars, set back from the perimeter, create spans of 7.50m across and 11.25m lengthwise. At the heart of each block is the “hydraulic block.” This central area houses restrooms and technical shafts. This clever design maximizes the flexible, open-plan layout. Glass-enclosed vertical circulation areas allow for views of the surrounding trees. Another staircase, tucked within the building, serves as an emergency exit. Each block has five floors. The ground floor is for parking, a practical solution given the high water table. The upper floors are adaptable for various uses. The facade, free of structural elements, allows for balconies in offset positions. This creates a dynamic visual effect. Connected to one of the buildings is an auditorium. It’s a square space, 36.00m per side, with a capacity of 800 people. The auditorium isn’t just any event space. It’s the home of the USP Symphony Orchestra (OSUSP). Its acoustics are specifically designed for musical performances. Sliding panels in the mezzanine allow for flexible configurations. The space can host everything from graduation ceremonies to university conferences. The Centro de Difusão Internacional is a testament to USP’s commitment to global engagement. It’s a place where cultures meet, ideas exchange, and stories begin.
