Ever wondered what secrets lie behind those imposing neoclassical columns? Welcome to the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil in Rio de Janeiro.
This magnificent building wasn’t always a cultural hub. It began its life in 1880. Architect Francisco Joaquim Bethencourt da Silva designed it. It initially served as the headquarters for the Commercial Association of Rio de Janeiro. The year 1906 saw its grand inauguration. Its rotunda even housed the Public Bonds Exchange a fascinating piece of history.
In the 1920s Banco do Brasil acquired the building. It became the bank’s headquarters. Imagine the bustling activity the countless transactions that took place within these very walls. For decades it served as the bank’s Central Branch then the Primeiro de Março Branch. It was a prominent figure in Brazilian finance.
But the story doesn’t end there. In 1986 a visionary plan took shape. The Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil was conceived. Under the leadership of Banco do Brasil president Camilo Calazans de Magalhães the building was transformed. On October 12 1989 the CCBB Rio de Janeiro opened its doors to the public. It was the first in a network of similar cultural centers.
The renovation was meticulous. The elegance of the original columns ornaments and marble staircases was painstakingly preserved. The dome over the rotunda was redesigned. The result is a stunning blend of historical preservation and modern functionality.
Today the Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil is a vibrant cultural center. It occupies 15046 square meters. It houses exhibition rooms a cinema a video screening room and multiple theaters. There’s even a library and a historical archive. In 2013 it was ranked the 21st most visited art museum globally. In 2015 its Picasso and Spanish Modernity exhibition was the most visited post-impressionist and modern exhibition worldwide.
This incredible transformation shows the power of vision. The Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil stands as a testament to preserving history and creating vibrant cultural spaces. It continues to amaze and inspire. Step inside and discover its rich history for yourself.
