Ever wonder how a city’s heart beats? That would be Historic Center of São Paulo. This is where the city was born. It is where Sāo Paulo began its journey from a small settlement to the metropolis we know today.

The Historic Center of São Paulo is also known simply as Centro. It marks the spot where Jesuit priests founded the city on January 25 1554. These priests were António Vieira Joseph of Anchieta and Manuel da Nobrega.

Today Centro encompasses the Sé and República districts. It is home to many buildings that tell the story of São Paulo. Pátio do Colégio marks the exact location of the city’s founding.

Imagine walking through Centro. You are surrounded by monuments from the 16th to the 20th centuries. Each building whispers tales of Brazil’s past.

Centro is not just about history. It is also a vibrant hub of culture. You will find cultural centers bustling bars and diverse restaurants. Museums display art and history. Government offices hum with activity.

The State Secretariat for Sport and Tourism offers walking tours. These tours guide you through the area’s architectural gems. You can see the São Paulo Bank now the State Department of Tourism. At the B3 headquarters you can watch stock transactions unfold.

Don’t miss the St Benedict’s Monastery. Attend a mass on Sunday morning and experience its spiritual atmosphere. Marvel at the Martinelli Building South America’s first skyscraper. Explore the Banco do Brasil Cultural Center with its halls cinema theater and bookstores.

The Municipal Theatre of São Paulo hosts free concerts on Wednesdays. Visit the Sé Cathedral a symbol of the city.

While Sé and República both contribute to Centro the true heart lies in Sé district. This area between Largo de São Francisco Largo São Bento and Sé Square forms a historical triangle. Here the Jesuit college stood the origin of São Paulo de Piratininga.

República known as Centro Novo or New Center came later. Yet it holds significant landmarks like the Municipal Theatre and the Mário de Andrade Library.

In the 20th century Centro saw both its peak and its decline. The city’s economic focus shifted southwest toward Paulista Avenue. Despite this Centro remained a vital hub until the 1970s.

However urban decay set in. Companies moved crime increased and public spaces deteriorated. Many residents left. By the early 1990s Centro faced profound degradation.

The government then initiated urban requalification. The City Hall moved back to the area. Largo São Bento and the Municipal Theatre were renovated. The Anhangabaú Valley was transformed into a pedestrian square.

Historically Centro was the financial heart of São Paulo. It remains a commercial and service center but many financial institutions have relocated. The Stock Exchange B3 still operates here.

Skyscrapers once housed major banks. Banespa Banco Mercantil de São Paulo and Unibanco had their headquarters here. Banco do Brasil built a large regional headquarters in the 1950s.

In 1976 twenty streets in Centro became pedestrian-only zones. This aimed to prioritize public transport. While initially controversial these “calcadaos” remain a key feature of Centro.

Today Centro attracts tourists with its landmarks. The Metropolitan Cathedral stands tall. The Municipal Theatre showcases stunning architecture. The Pátio do Colégio marks the city’s birthplace.

The St Benedict’s Monastery offers a glimpse into history. Galeria do Rock is a meeting point for urban subcultures. The Altino Arantes Building provides panoramic views. The Martinelli Building boasts a captivating terrace.

The Anhangabaú Valley hosts events and fairs. Cultural centers like Caixa Econômica Federal and Banco do Brasil enrich the area. Viaduto do Chá connects old and new. The Law School of USP stands as a historic institution.

The Santa Ifigênia Viaduct a metal structure from Belgium adds to the landscape. The Post Office Palace designed by Ramos de Azevedo has been restored.
