Step into the hallowed halls of the Centre for the Book. This isn’t just any library. It’s a national monument a treasure trove of South African literary history. Originally built in 1913 it housed the University of the Cape of Good Hope. Think of it the exam hall for future universities like Stellenbosch and the University of South Africa. The building’s architects W Hawke and W N McKinlay later designed the iconic Union Buildings. Imagine the students who walked these very floors. They likely had no idea their exam centre would one day become a cherished literary hub.

The Centre for the Book wasn’t always dedicated to books. In 1932 the University of South Africa moved to Pretoria. The building then became home to the National Archives. A fire detection system and an elevator were added. This unique elevator opens in three directions a testament to the building’s unusual layout. In 1987 the South African Library was offered the building. By 1990 the building needed serious repairs. Crumbling stonework and roof damage threatened this architectural gem. Despite these challenges the building was declared a National Monument. John Rennie a restoration expert oversaw its transformation. He worked with a limited budget but preserved the building’s unique Edwardian style.

Today the Centre for the Book promotes reading writing and publishing. It’s an outreach unit of the National Library of South Africa. It aims to make books accessible to everyone. This elegant venue hosts meetings book launches conferences and even weddings. It’s a place where the past whispers stories to the future. The dome ceiling of the main hall is particularly striking. It’s a beautiful space often used for concerts and receptions. The legacy of this building is rich. From exams to archives to a literary haven it stands as a symbol of Cape Town’s enduring spirit. So take a moment to appreciate the beauty and history of the Centre for the Book. Let the stories within its walls inspire you.
