Did you know Central Toronto Academy wasn’t always called that? This impressive building before us has a rich history. It started life in 1911 not as Central Toronto Academy but as an offshoot of Central Technical School. Eight commercial classes initially met at King Edward Public School. Then they moved to Clinton Street Public School.

Finally in 1916 the classes found a permanent home. A Collegiate Gothic style building opened its doors on Shaw Street. It was then known as the Central High School of Commerce. The school focused on business and commerce. It educated generations of students in these fields. It thrived for years.

Over time Central High School of Commerce evolved. It became a comprehensive high school. It added a wide range of programs. These included core academic subjects. Students also benefited from computer classes music art drama and health and physical education. Grade 12 students even had the opportunity to take University College and College level courses.

In September 2014 a significant change occurred. Central Commerce Collegiate Institute was renamed Central Toronto Academy. This reflected a shift in the school’s philosophy. The focus changed from business and commerce to arts academics and athletics. This change is a testament to the school’s adaptability. It shows its commitment to providing a well-rounded education.

Central Toronto Academy’s commitment to innovation extends beyond academics. In 2013 the school installed solar panels on its roof. This initiative highlighted its environmental consciousness. It also provided students with practical experience in renewable energy.
