Could a skyscraper hold the world’s highest church? It can if it’s Central Plaza in Hong Kong. Central Plaza isn’t just a towering giant. It’s a symbol of architectural innovation, completed in 1992. It once held the title of Asia’s tallest building, a reign that lasted until 1996 when Shenzhen’s Shun Hing Square surpassed it. Central Plaza even boasts a unique triangular floor plan. This distinctive design allows for better internal office spaces. At the top, a neon clock tells time with a vibrant display of changing colors every 15 minutes. The clock blinks at each quarter-hour change, marking the passage of time across the city. High above, an anemometer sits atop Central Plaza’s mast, a staggering 378 meters above sea level. The mast itself is a significant 102 meters tall. And within this towering structure, you’ll find Sky City Church, the world’s highest church inside a skyscraper. Central Plaza consists of a 368-meter office tower and a 30.5-meter podium block. The tower base houses the main entrance and public spaces. The tower body contains 57 office floors, a sky lobby, and mechanical floors. Six mechanical floors and the 102-meter mast form the tower top. The ground level features a sprawling landscaped garden. This 8,400 square meter space offers a tranquil escape with a fountain, trees, and artificial stone paving. The first level serves as a public thoroughfare. Three pedestrian bridges connect Central Plaza to the Mass Transit Railway, the Convention and Exhibition Centre, and the China Resource Building. This public use earned the building a 20% plot ratio bonus. Central Plaza stands as a testament to human ingenuity and a unique blend of the secular and the sacred.
