The Central Jail Varanasi was originally built to hold 984 prisoners. However, it has been severely overcrowded for many years. In fact, there are currently around 2,300 prisoners living within its walls. This overcrowding has led to a number of problems, including poor sanitation and a lack of access to healthcare. To address this issue, 15 new barracks are being built. This will increase the jail’s capacity by 450 prisoners. While this won’t completely solve the problem of overcrowding, it will certainly help to alleviate some of the pressure on the existing infrastructure.
