Ever wondered how a Texas missionary shaped religious life in Antigua? Central Baptist Church has a unique story. Since 1965 Central Baptist Church has ministered in Antigua and Barbuda. For its first 20 years, six non-nationals led the church. Each served for only a short time. Pastor Cleo D. Morse from Texas was the founding minister. He was an independently supported missionary with Southern Baptist roots.

Let’s step back to December 31, 1985. That day marked a turning point for Central Baptist Church. Dr. Hensworth W.C. Jonas became Pastor and Presiding Elder. He was the first Antiguan-born national in this role.

Central Baptist Church is the oldest surviving Baptist church on Antigua. It played a vital role in establishing the East Caribbean Baptist Mission. The church also planted other churches. The East Caribbean Baptist Mission was founded by Central Baptist Church on August 14, 1991. It was incorporated in 1996 by an Act of Parliament in Antigua and Barbuda.
