Standing before you is the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering, or NCREE for short. It might seem like an unusual tourist destination, but trust me, this place is fascinating. Established in 1980, the NCREE is a testament to Taiwan’s commitment to earthquake preparedness. You see, Taiwan sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, making it highly susceptible to earthquakes. The NCREE’s mission is to improve seismic-resistant designs for buildings and infrastructure, mitigating potential earthquake damage. Inside, they have an incredible facility called the “Shaking Table”, a massive platform that can simulate earthquake ground motions in six degrees of freedom. Imagine a giant platform, five meters by five meters, capable of holding a 50-ton building model. This table can mimic the most intense earthquakes, helping engineers understand how structures will behave during these events. The data collected helps improve building codes and develop new earthquake-resistant technologies, making Taiwan a safer place.
Hauptfriedhof
Lost in time stands the Hauptfriedhof Trier. A tranquil expanse in the bustling city it’s more than just a cemetery.
