Established in 1961 Cedarbrae Collegiate Institute stands proudly on Markham Road. It’s a testament to Scarborough’s growth. This wasn’t always a bustling neighbourhood. Imagine a time before the modern cityscape. A grist mill stood here in 1830. Peter Secor’s mill marked the area’s early history. Cedarbrae’s construction cost over $3500000. Architects Hugh L Allward and George Roper Gouinlock designed this impressive building. It became Scarborough’s seventh collegiate. It was also the first composite high school. This meant it offered both academic and vocational programs. It eased overcrowding at other schools. John Grabb served as its founding principal. Francis S Jennings was its first vice-principal.
Cedarbrae Collegiate Institute quickly became a landmark. It’s the largest school in Scarborough by area. The 16-acre campus boasts 48 classrooms. Eight science labs offer students hands-on learning. The impressive facility also includes a gymnasium. This gymnasium can be divided into three smaller ones. There’s a pool a film studio and a theatre. Sadly Cedarbrae Collegiate Institute has experienced challenging events. A fire in June 2010 postponed final exams. A former student was charged in connection with the incident. In February 2020 a shooting near the school led to a lockdown. Despite these difficulties Cedarbrae has a strong history. Many notable alumni have achieved great things. Jermaine Gabriel a CFL player for the Toronto Argonauts is one example. Brent Imlach an NHL player and Carole Pope the lead singer of Rough Trade are others. Michael and Jeff Wincott both successful actors are alumni too.
