In 1987 the old UWC men’s residence was renamed Cecil Esau Residence. This wasn’t just a name change. It was a powerful statement. It honored Cecyl Esau a remarkable man. He was an activist a scholar and a symbol of the South African spirit.

Cecil Esau Residence stands as a tribute to a life dedicated to justice. Esau’s journey began in Worcester. He was born there in 1955 the youngest of four. He became involved in anti-apartheid activism early in his life. His father’s influence was significant. The elder Esau sparked his son’s interest in politics.

Esau attended the University of the Western Cape. He studied law. But his studies were interrupted. He was expelled for a year. He also spent time in detention. Despite the obstacles Esau remained committed to his activism. He actively recruited students to the ANC. His dedication led to his imprisonment on Robben Island. He served a 12-year sentence.

Even imprisonment didn’t stop Esau’s fight for freedom. After his release in 1991 he worked for the ANC. He also continued his education earning a BA Honours in Development Studies. He then went on to achieve an MA. He later worked for the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation.

Esau’s legacy extends far beyond his activism. He was a gentle revolutionary a man of unwavering commitment. He always respected others’ rights. He is remembered for his work in oral history. He tirelessly documented the stories of ordinary people. He listened to understand not to judge.

Cecil Esau Residence is more than just a building. It’s a physical representation of a powerful legacy. It stands as a testament to the courage conviction and humility of Cecyl Esau. It is a place that inspires us to remember. We remember his contributions. We remember his fight for justice. We remember his commitment to a fairer society. His life’s work continues to resonate. The work continues to this day.
