Imagine stepping carefully on the right side of the path. This path leads from Fernetti-Monrupino road to Rossoni property. Just ten meters before the well north-west of Fernetti, there it is: the Cavernetta presso le Tre Querce.

The Cavernetta presso le Tre Querce is a small cave. It is located in the Carso Triestino area in the municipality of Monrupino. This area is also known as Repentabor. The cave entrance lies at 318 meters above sea level.

The cave’s name translates to “Small Cave near the Three Oaks”. This name hints at its location. It is near three prominent oak trees. The Cavernetta presso le Tre Querce has a modest planimetric development of only six meters. Its depth and total difference in height are just three meters. The bottom of the cave rests at 315 meters above sea level.

The entrance to the Cavernetta presso le Tre Querce faces the foot of a rock wall. The outer surface consists of collapse and fill deposits.

Near the Cavernetta presso le Tre Querce, a solid little wall stands. It was erected with material taken from the cave during excavation work.

Inside the Cavernetta presso le Tre Querce, the cave features a simple, horizontal layout. It consists of a single chamber. The walkable floor area measures about 12 square meters. The floor is predominantly gravel. There is little to no concretion inside, and no internal water source. Recent collapses have occurred within the cave. This cave is not a tourist cave.

Archaeological surveys suggest that the Cavernetta presso le Tre Querce has a history. Back in 1975, the Società Alpina delle Giulie conducted a recovery investigation here. On the cave floor, they found bone fragments possibly from meals. Traces of ancient hearths were discovered.

These findings suggest past human activity. However current data is insufficient for an accurate archaeological assessment of the Cavernetta presso le Tre Querce.

Franco Gherlizza documented the Cavernetta presso le Tre Querce in 2019. The Club Alpinistico Triestino holds records of the cave. The cave is cataloged under number 2671. Its local registry number is 4890VG. The cave’s coordinates are readily available. They are accessible via GPS. The last recorded position update was on October 10, 2014. A sign marks its entrance today.

Imagine ancient people seeking shelter within the Cavernetta presso le Tre Querce. They lit fires and cooked meals here. The Cavernetta presso le Tre Querce is a place where nature and human history intertwine.
