How about stepping back in time within the walls of the Caverna delle Mura? This isn’t just any cave. It’s a place where history and nature intertwine.

The Caverna delle Mura has three entrances. It sits at 272 meters above sea level. It is located 1.2 km southwest of Borgo Grotta Gigante. It is also 1.8 km east of Contovello.

Known for centuries, the Caverna delle Mura was significantly altered during World War I. New openings were created towards the nearby sinkhole. One of these is now impassable. You can enter through a slope that leads to a detrital mound. From there, two caverns branch out. They are connected by tunnels. The Austrian military opened these tunnels. They removed material that clogged them.

Prehistoric humans once inhabited the Caverna delle Mura. They found the dry, illuminated southern part ideal. Military activity disturbed the ground. Now, fragments of pottery are visible on the surface. These likely came from deeper layers. The northern branch retains its original form. You can still see the wall noted in an 1896 survey.

The cave extends 71 meters horizontally. It extends 73 meters spatially. It reaches a depth of 5 meters. The total difference in elevation is 5 meters as well. The bottom lies at 268.5 meters above sea level.

Inside the Caverna delle Mura, the layout is intricate. It features multiple chambers. The walkable area covers 150 square meters. The ground is mainly gravel. There is little to no concretion. Water is absent. Animal burrows and bone remains are present. You may spot wire and tools.

Archaeological finds include non-specified ceramic artifacts. These were noted on ground disturbed by World War I works. Franco Gherlizza and Enrico Halupca documented them in 1988. The Caverna delle Mura is located in the Triestine Karst area. It sits on a plateau summit with a grassy environment. The cave’s floor is mainly gravel.

The Caverna delle Mura is more than just a cave. It’s a journey through time. It’s a reminder of the layers of history beneath our feet.
