Governor Macquarie’s grand vision. That’s what Castlereagh is all about. This unassuming suburb north-west of Sydney holds a pivotal place in Australia’s history. One of five towns founded in 1810 by Governor Lachlan Macquarie himself. Castlereagh was named to honor Lord Viscount Castlereagh the Secretary of State for War and the Colonies. He in turn was named after Castlereagh in Northern Ireland.

Macquarie envisioned Castlereagh as a thriving settlement. A center for the Evan or Nepean District. He carefully chose its location. His goal was to provide settlers with accommodation above flood level. Land along the Nepean River was fertile but also prone to devastating floods. Macquarie’s foresight is evident in his choice of this elevated location.

The original site selected by Macquarie in 1810 for Castlereagh is slightly different from the present-day suburb. The modern settlement is about five kilometers from Macquarie’s original selection. The construction of the Great Western Road from Parramatta to Emu Ford in 1815 shifted the area’s focal point to Penrith. This impacted Castlereagh’s initial development.

Yet Castlereagh persevered. It boasts a rich history reflected in its surviving buildings. Hadley Park for instance stands largely intact. Built around 1806 it’s a significant early colonial structure. Nepean Park another example is a two-story Georgian-style farmhouse built by convict labor around 1822. These buildings along with historic churches and cemeteries are testaments to Castlereagh’s enduring heritage.

Castlereagh Road itself has served as a vital transport link. Connecting the Hawkesbury and Penrith regions for years. The area also features historic schools including Upper Castlereagh Public School. Built between 1878 and 1879 it replaced an earlier Wesleyan schoolhouse. Castlereagh’s legacy extends to its agricultural industry. The rich river flats continue to support thriving farming.

An obelisk erected on April 7 1951 commemorates the founding of Castlereagh by Governor Macquarie. This monument stands in front of Castlereagh Hall previously the council chambers. The event was marked by an interesting historical address highlighting Macquarie’s significance as a governor. Castlereagh though initially overshadowed by Penrith remains a place of historical importance. Its story is one of resilience adaptation and an enduring connection to Australia’s past. A past that continues to shape its present. Castlereagh a story etched in time. A story worth exploring.
