What secrets does Monte Carso hold? High atop Monte Carso, overlooking the valley, lies the Castelliere di Monte Carso. Also known as Gradišče Vrh Griže, this ancient hillfort whispers tales of a time long past. Carlo Marchesetti, a renowned archaeologist, described the Castelliere di Monte Carso in the early 20th century as one of the largest and most heavily fortified settlements in the Trieste Karst. He marveled at its impressive walls, stretching over 1700 meters, encircling an area of at least 300,000 square meters. The natural cliffs on the north and west sides provided additional protection, making the Castelliere di Monte Carso a formidable stronghold. The Castelliere di Monte Carso’s defensive walls were truly a marvel of ancient engineering. Built with dry-stone masonry, some sections still stand at a height of one to one and a half meters, and a width of 20 to 30 meters. These remnants hint at the original two-meter-thick walls that once guarded this prehistoric settlement. Within the outer walls, a smaller inner enclosure protected a mound rising about 40 meters high. This inner sanctum, evidenced by a higher concentration of black soil and pottery shards, suggests a more permanent dwelling place. The outer area likely served as a wartime encampment, strategically chosen for its easily defensible position. Imagine the inhabitants of the Castelliere di Monte Carso during times of conflict. They would retreat within the walls, their families and livestock safe within the inner enclosure. From this vantage point, they could survey the valley below, watching for approaching enemies. Access to the Castelliere di Monte Carso was primarily through the narrow Rosandra Valley. A massive 15-to-20-meter-wide wall, built from tumbled blocks, further restricted entry through the valley’s narrow gorges. Scattered pottery shards found among these stones confirm the wall’s ancient origins, contemporaneous with the Castelliere di Monte Carso itself. The Castelliere di Monte Carso stands as a testament to the ingenuity and resilience of the people who once called this place home. It reminds us that history is not just found in books but etched into the very landscape we inhabit. The Castelliere di Monte Carso offers a glimpse into the lives and challenges faced by those who came before us.
