Step into the world of Casa da Rocha. This isn’t just a house. It’s a testament to Brazilian architectural genius. Designed by the renowned Paulo Mendes da Rocha this home stands as a masterpiece of modern architecture. Casa da Rocha isn’t just one house. It’s actually two almost identical twin houses. They were built side-by-side. One was for Mendes da Rocha himself. The other was for his sister.

Built between 1964 and 1967 the Casa da Rocha sits on a sloping hillside in the Butantã district of São Paulo. The structure is remarkably modular. Four pillars support the main floor. This floor is a ribbed slab. It cantilevers in both directions. This creates a shaded space below. That shaded area is an access area. It’s only interrupted by a cylinder. This cylinder houses domestic staff quarters and a staircase. The staircase leads to the upper floor.

On the upper level the bedrooms are clustered in the center. They are lit from above. This design frees up the perimeter. The perimeter is dedicated to communal living areas. These areas flow directly out to the street. The partition walls are unique. They’re made of five-centimeter concrete slabs. These slabs don’t reach the ceiling. This allows for excellent ventilation throughout the house. This design element even extends to the exterior. It’s visible on the east and west facades. A wall provides shade and also acts as a tie-beam for the roof.

Casa da Rocha wasn’t initially designed to be built on-site. It was conceived as a prefabricated structure. However the final structure was built using cast-in-place concrete. It’s a fascinating example of how a design can adapt and still maintain its core principles. The use of concrete throughout the building gives Casa da Rocha a powerful and almost imposing presence. Yet the design elements such as the shaded areas and open floor plans create a sense of light and airy living spaces.

The Casa da Rocha is more than just a house. It represents Mendes da Rocha’s philosophy. It’s a counterpoint to the traditional villas of the middle class. The open layout and exposed concrete challenge convention. The modular design shows how prefabrication ideas could influence a structure. The innovative ventilation and light-well design features demonstrate Mendes da Rocha’s commitment to sustainable and comfortable living. This home is a true reflection of its creator’s innovative spirit and design philosophy. It continues to inspire architects and visitors alike. A visit to Casa da Rocha is a journey into the heart of Brazilian modernism.
