During her time on the City Council, Carol DeLong championed numerous projects. These projects left a lasting impact on Falls Church. She oversaw the construction of the City Hall East Wing addition. She contributed to the creation of Madison Park. She was also responsible for the building of the W&OD trail bridge. It crosses West Broad Street.
DeLong was a strong advocate for affordable housing. She supported the Falls Church Housing Corporation’s purchase of 81 apartments. These apartments at Winter Hill were preserved as low-income housing. They were for the elderly and people with disabilities.
She also fought for the establishment of Aurora House. It is a residential counseling center for adolescent girls. Furthering her commitment to the community. She promoted the establishment of the Falls Church Farmers Market. It became a beloved weekly tradition.
Carol DeLong’s influence reached beyond Falls Church. She served on the Northern Virginia Transportation Commission. She also chaired the Metropolitan Washington Council of Government’s Transportation Planning Board. She helped broker compromises on transportation funding.
Her dedication earned her several awards. She received the Mattie Gundry Award in 1999. It recognized her work in furthering the standing of women. In 2002, she received the Jane and Wayne Dexter Award. It honored her exemplary service to Citizens for a Better City.
