“Love,” St. Therese once said, “is to be love in the heart of my Mother the Church.” The Carmelite Convent Chapel in Cape Town embodies this sentiment.

This chapel is part of a Carmelite monastery. It stands as a testament to faith and devotion. The Carmelite nuns dedicate their lives to prayer and service. They offer a hidden yet powerful contribution to the community.

Let’s step back in time. In 1951, Cardinal Owen McCann of Cape Town sought to establish a Carmelite presence here. He reached out to the Carmelite community in Rivonia, Johannesburg. This community had been founded in 1931. He asked if they could create a foundation in Cape Town.

In 1952, four sisters arrived in Cape Town from the Rivonia Carmel. They started their foundation in Wynberg. They lived in a small four-roomed house. It belonged to the Dominican Sisters. On November 24, 1952, they celebrated their first Mass. These four foundresses dedicated themselves to love, prayer, and self-offering. They did so for God’s glory. They also served the Church. They especially prayed for priests and those in need of God’s mercy.

The community flourished. Vocations increased. Benefactors helped them expand the original house into a large monastery. However, over time, vocations declined. Many elderly sisters passed away. The remaining sisters found it difficult to maintain the large monastery.

In May 2001, they moved to a smaller, single-story convent in Retreat. This marked a new chapter for the Carmelite Convent Chapel. In April 2002, five sisters arrived from the Carmel in Jaro, Iloilo, Philippines. These missionaries brought new life to the community. The Carmel in Cape Town experienced renewed growth.

Today, the united community continues to live out the charism of St. Teresa. They strive to be “Daughters of the Church.” Their daily horarium is a rigorous schedule of prayer and work.

The Carmelite Convent Chapel is more than just a building. It is a place of constant prayer. Morning Prayer begins at 6:15 A.M.. Holy Mass follows at 7:00 A.M.. The sisters engage in mental prayer, spiritual reading, and examination of conscience. Their lives are structured around seeking God.

The sisters also support themselves by making altar breads.

The Carmelite nuns live a contemplative life. They pray for the needs of the Church and all people. They are hidden with Christ in God. They offer a service of love. This echoes the words of St. Teresa of Avila. Mental prayer, she said, is nothing else but falling in love with Christ. It is frequently conversing in secret with him who we know loves us.

The story of the Carmelite Convent Chapel reflects dedication. It reflects renewal. It shows the enduring power of faith. It reminds us of the beauty of a life lived in service to God.
