Tucked away on Lloyd Avenue, Carlingford Library isn’t just a place for books. It’s a living testament to the spirit of this unique Sydney suburb. Carlingford Library first opened its doors on July 26, 1969. The library stands on land with a rich history. The land title was transferred to Baulkham Hills Shire Council on August 11, 1966. Two years later, the council approved plans for the library, designed by architect Bruce S. Smith. Carlingford Library has seen its share of changes over the years. The building has undergone additions and alterations, reflecting the evolving needs of the community. In 2016, a significant shift occurred. Due to council amalgamation, Carlingford Library was transferred from Hills Shire Council to the City of Parramatta Council. It officially reopened under the new council on November 10, 2016. Before it became “Carlingford”, this area was known as Mobbs Hill. It was named after William Mobbs, an early settler who arrived in Australia as a convict. He transformed his 30-acre grant into a thriving orchard, eventually owning over 700 acres. The name Carlingford was suggested by another prominent resident, Frederick Cox. He thought the area resembled Carlingford in Ireland. The name was officially adopted in 1886. Today, Carlingford Library offers a range of services to the community, beyond just borrowing books. It provides a Justice of the Peace service and facsimile services. The library’s opening hours are designed to cater to the community’s needs, with late opening on Wednesdays. Carlingford Library continues to be a vital resource for the community. It stands as a symbol of the area’s transformation from farmland to thriving suburb.
