“Did you know that Capital Hill Baptist Church once had a different name?” I ask. The church stands before us a testament to faith. Its history stretches back to 1878. It was founded as Metropolitan Baptist Church. The name was later changed. This was to differentiate it from another church with the same name. It then became Capitol Hill Metropolitan Baptist Church. Finally it was shortened to its current name.

Capital Hill Baptist Church is located just six blocks from the US Capitol. It’s affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention. Many people don’t know this. The church’s current senior pastor is Mark Dever. He runs his 9Marks ministry there. This ministry teaches principles of “healthy church” practices.

The church has a rich and fascinating past. It’s seen many changes over the years. Before Mark Dever many other pastors served. Among them were significant figures. These include K Owen White. He was once president of the Southern Baptist Convention. He was an early proponent of conservative theological fundamentalism. He later became pastor at First Baptist Church in Houston Texas. Another notable pastor was Harold Lindsell. He served as interim pastor. He was also the editor of Christianity Today. The church’s history is filled with dynamic theologically conservative preaching. This was a trademark throughout much of the early 20th century.

Today Capital Hill Baptist Church remains a vibrant community. Its average member age is 31. It’s considered the “epicenter of the new Calvinism”. The church emphasizes regenerate church membership. It has a church covenant to support this practice. Interestingly despite its conservative nature. It supports having female deacons. The church stands as a beacon of faith. It’s a place where people from all backgrounds come together. They find community and spiritual growth.

Capital Hill Baptist Church isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to the enduring power of faith. It’s a place where history echoes in every stone. Every pew whispers stories of generations past. It’s a place of hope. It’s a place where lives are transformed. And it continues to be a significant part of the fabric of Capitol Hill.
