Capilano 5, a vibrant community, boasts over 500 homes, including the newly named Chief Joe Mathias Centre, the “Li’l Ones School”, and a bustling Youth Centre that pulsates with the energy of the younger generation. Xwemelch’stn, meaning “Fast Moving Water of Fish”, pays homage to the Capilano River, which is known for its abundance of salmon. The Squamish people have always held a deep connection to the river, relying on its bounty and sacred rivers for sustenance and survival.
