High on a hill overlooking the old Campo Grande railway station sits the Capela São José da Boa Viagem. This isn’t just any chapel. It’s a testament to the hard-working families who built their lives around this station. The Capela São José da Boa Viagem whispers stories of a time when trains chugged along the tracks, carrying timber and coal from the surrounding areas to Jundiaí and Santos. The station, a modest “third class” affair, was the heart of this bustling trade. Families, mainly immigrants from Italy, Portugal, and Spain, settled here. Some had helped build the railway, others were drawn by the promise of work in the timber industry. As the community grew, so did their spiritual needs. Father Luiz Capra, chaplain of the Ribeirão Pires and Alto da Serra region (present-day Paranapiacaba), recognized this. He envisioned a place where these families could gather in faith. In 1910, construction began on the Capela São José da Boa Viagem. It was consecrated between May 1912 and April 1913. The chapel, built of solid masonry, features a wooden arched doorway and two side openings that let in streams of light. Inside, two side oratories flank a small central altar. While it didn’t have a permanent priest, the Capela São José da Boa Viagem quickly became the community’s spiritual anchor. Weddings, masses, baptisms, processions – all took place within its welcoming walls. High atop the chapel, a statue of Christ the Redeemer was placed. It overlooked the community, arms outstretched. Local lore tells a fascinating tale about this statue. During the 1930s, relentless rain for 25 days brought the timber industry to a standstill. A frustrated timber worker, Angelin Arnoni, shot at the statue in a fit of rage. Legend says the weather cleared immediately after. Over time, the statue’s arms deteriorated and underwent restoration. Today, they face out towards the sea. The Capela São José da Boa Viagem stands as a symbol of resilience, faith, and the enduring spirit of a community. In 2011, it was officially recognized for its historical and cultural significance. It’s more than just a building. It is a living piece of Santo André’s history.
