“Founded in 1960” the inscription above the entrance to Capela Santa Cristina almost whispers. Let’s delve into the story of this chapel. Capela Santa Cristina began as a small base community. It is now the Paróquia Santa Cristina in Parque Bristol.
Before becoming a parish on October 30 1960 the community was called Centro Comunitário São Raimundo Nonato. In 1960 the new parish was separated from Nossa Senhora das Mercês parish. Father Frei Teodoro Casaldero OM was the first vicar of Santa Cristina. The first pastor was Father Virgínio Demnodonne PIME. The Mercedários helped with evangelization in Parque Bristol until 1968.
Back then the Igreja Católica Apostólica Brasileira ICAB was strong. It was known as the “padre” Paulo church on top of the hill. Until then the church was known as the Parque Bristol parish church and nearby areas.
Capela Santa Cristina has a strong history with grassroots church communities CEBs. This is a result of the Second Vatican Council. The community fought alongside authorities for essential services. These included running water asphalt buses schools health posts nurseries and housing.
The parish’s geography is quite rugged. Its socioeconomic structure reflects a disadvantaged population. Today the parish includes the Matriz Santa Cristina. It also includes the São Domingos de Gusmão community. The Centro Educacional Infantil Santa Cristina CEISC is part of it. So is the Centro Educacional Infantil São Savério CEISS. The parish has about 30000 residents. Eighteen priests have served and assisted in this parish.
Pastoral challenges are significant. This is due to its location in a peripheral community. It struggles to find its identity. It seeks to be a cell in the local Church. This includes the Immigrants Sector. It’s part of the Ipiranga Region and the Archdiocese of São Paulo.
