Three hundred years ago three fishermen cast their nets into the Paraiba River. They were searching for fish for a banquet. Their luck was terrible. Then Joao Alves made one last cast. He pulled up a headless statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This is the story of the Capela Nossa Senhora Aparecida.
The fishermen found the head in a second cast. Miraculously their nets overflowed with fish on their third try. This was no ordinary catch. This was a miracle.
News of their miraculous find spread. People from nearby villages came to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary. They called her Nossa Senhora da Conceicao Aparecida. Our Lady of the Appeared Conception. The small hut where the statue was housed became too small. A larger chapel was built. More and more people came to pray at the Capela Nossa Senhora Aparecida.
They told stories of graces and miracles. The devotion to Our Lady of Aparecida grew. In 1846 work started on a new church. It was completed in 1888. Pope St Pius X ordered the statue to be crowned in 1904.
In 1930 Pope Pius XI declared Our Lady of Aparecida the Patroness of Brazil. The Capela Nossa Senhora Aparecida is a place of deep faith and devotion.
