Wondering where your journey truly begins? It is right here at Cape Town International Airport. This airport is more than just a transit point. It’s a gateway to the vibrant city of Cape Town and a testament to South Africa’s evolving history.

Cape Town International Airport first opened its doors in 1954. It replaced the old Wingfield Aerodrome. Back then, it was named D.F. Malan Airport after the Prime Minister.

Imagine the excitement of those early international flights. One went directly to Britain. The other flew to Britain via Johannesburg.

With the end of apartheid in the early 1990s, things changed. The airport’s ownership shifted to the Airports Company South Africa. It was then renamed Cape Town International Airport to reflect a new era.

Cape Town International Airport experienced rapid growth. Trade and tourism boomed. By 2004/2005, it handled over 8 million passengers.

To prepare for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, a massive upgrade took place. The airport built a central terminal building. This connected the international and domestic terminals. The cost was a staggering R1.6 billion.

The Central Terminal Building boasts 120 check-in desks. It also features 20 self-service kiosks. This caters to both international and domestic passengers. The baggage handling system can process 30000 bags per hour.

Cape Town International Airport has continued to expand. It features upgraded domestic and international terminals. These upgrades ensure a smooth travel experience.

Need to grab a bite? The airport offers diverse dining options. You can find everything from fast food to sit-down restaurants. The Spur restaurant here is one of the largest in Africa.

Looking for accommodation? Two hotels are conveniently located near the airport. They are the Hotel Verde and the Road Lodge Hotel.

Getting to and from Cape Town International Airport is easy. The N2 freeway provides direct access. There are almost 6000 parking spaces available. Options include multi-storey, shaded, and open car parks.

Cape Town International Airport is now the third-largest airport in Africa. It serves as a major hub. It connects Cape Town to destinations around the globe. Direct flights reach Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Europe, South America, Australia, and the United States.

Fun fact. The route between Cape Town and Johannesburg was once the world’s ninth-busiest air route. It served approximately 4.5 million passengers in 2011.

Cape Town International Airport stands as a symbol of progress. It reflects South Africa’s journey. So, as you pass through its gates, remember its story. It is a story of transformation and connection.
