What secrets does Cape D’Aguilar Cave hold? Cape D’Aguilar, also known as Hok Tsui, is located on the southeastern tip of Hong Kong Island. It’s named after Major-General George Charles D’Aguilar, an important figure in Hong Kong’s history. The cape is famous for its Instagram-worthy cave, historic lighthouse, and the skeletal remains of a whale. Our adventure at Cape D’Aguilar Cave begins with a bus ride from Shau Kei Wan station. Remember to use the restrooms at the station before boarding because there aren’t any facilities at the cape itself. The bus journey takes about 40 minutes. Once we arrive, we’ll begin our exploration of this unique site. The trail is relatively easy, mostly flat and paved. It’s about an 8 kilometer walk, but be mindful of passing vehicles. The walk to the marine reserve is approximately 5 kilometers, with beautiful views of Stanley and Tai Tam along the way. Cape D’Aguilar Cave, sometimes called Thunder Cave, is near the marine reserve. A hidden path leads to its entrance. It’s called Thunder Cave because of the thunderous sound created when waves crash against the rocks. Be careful as you enter. The cave is dark and the rocks can be slippery. Inside Cape D’Aguilar Cave, you’ll find a narrow passage. Some areas require scrambling, so be prepared to use your hands. A good torch is essential. Beyond the cave lies the Swire Institute of Marine Science. Outside the institute, you’ll see the skeleton of a whale. This whale was found in Victoria Harbour in 1955. Due to weathering, the original skeleton has been replaced with a 3D printed replica. Close by, you’ll discover another interesting formation. Crab Cave, aptly named for its crab-like shape. Both the cave and the skeleton are popular photo spots, so try to visit early in the morning or on a weekday to avoid crowds. On our way back, we’ll visit the Cape D’Aguilar Lighthouse. This 9.7-meter tall structure is the oldest surviving lighthouse in Hong Kong. It’s one of five pre-war lighthouses and a declared monument. Remember the walk back to the bus stop is the same route we took in. Cape D’Aguilar offers a blend of natural beauty, historical significance and Instagrammable moments.
