Can Sydney quench your thirst for history? Look at the Canopy Fountain in Macquarie Place Park. This isn’t just a fountain. It’s a time capsule from 1869. One of eight originally ordered by Mayor Walter Renny. These cast-iron canopies came all the way from the Walter Macfarlane & Co. catalog in Glasgow, Scotland. Their journey across the oceans echoes in the ripples of the water.

The Canopy Fountain, a stunning example of Victorian design, stands nearly ten feet tall. Four columns rise to meet arches, decorated with ornate moldings. Griffins perch atop the capitals, guarding the structure like mythical treasures. Look closer at the lunettes. A crane, an open bible with a verse from St. John, and the seal of Sydney. The verse speaks of eternal thirst. A fitting inscription for a drinking fountain, wouldn’t you say? The seal boasts the city’s motto: “I take, but I surrender.” A curious phrase for a city known for its vibrant energy.

Originally, the Canopy Fountain featured a much more elaborate font. Five foot eight inches high, adorned with salamanders, symbols of courage. A central urn dispensed water into cups hanging from chains. The crane, a symbol of vigilance, stood watch. The original font was sadly replaced with a simpler bubbler in 1916. The current bubbler, while not as ornate, still serves the original purpose. Offering refreshment to passersby. A testament to the enduring need for water in our bustling city.

In the 1990s, a study proposed the reconstruction of a brass swan for the fountain’s center. Though cranes were the standard terminal, Macfarlane encouraged customization. So, a swan might have graced this spot. Imagine that elegant bird gliding atop the water, a symbol of grace and beauty. Even without the swan, the Canopy Fountain captivates with its intricate details and whispers of Victorian ideals. Temperance and civic virtue echo in the quiet splash of the water. A reminder of a different era, preserved in the heart of modern Sydney. So, next time you pass this fountain, take a moment to appreciate its story. A journey from a Scottish foundry to a bustling city park. A story of changing times, enduring needs, and the beauty of a well-crafted canopy.
