Before European settlement, the Cabragal clan of the Darug nation called this area home for over 30,000 years. Canley Vale was once a woodland. It was originally part of the Male Orphan School Estate.
Sir Henry Parkes played a significant role here. He named the railway station Canley Moat House. He even had his own private landing by the line. “Vale” means valley or dale.
For a time, Cabramatta and Canley Vale were one community. They were known as Cabravale from the 1920s. Some organizations still use this name. The Cabravale Diggers rugby league club is one example.
The municipality of Cabramatta and Canley Vale was redivided in 1899. Separate wards were established in 1900. In 1948, they became part of the Fairfield local government area. Canley Vale’s first public school opened in 1884. The school still operates today as a primary school.
According to the 2021 census, Canley Vale has about 10,300 residents. A diverse community thrives here. About 34.1% of people were born in Australia. Many residents come from Vietnam, Cambodia, and China.
English is spoken at home by only 16% of the population. Vietnamese, Cantonese, Khmer, Mandarin, and Arabic are also common languages. Buddhism, Catholicism, and no religion are the most common religious affiliations. Vietnamese, Chinese, Australian, English, and Khmer ancestries are most prevalent.
Getting around Canley Vale is easy. The Canley Vale railway station sits on the Old Main South line.
Culturally, Canley Vale offers much. Westacott Cottage on Railway Parade houses the Fairfield City Arts and Crafts Centre. Several temples dot the landscape. Thien An Temple, A Di Da Temple, and Minh Quang Temple cater to the Buddhist community.
Families have access to several schools. Pal Buddhist School is a private co-educational school. Canley Vale Public School and Canley Vale High School are public options.
For leisure, residents head to the Cabravale Leisure Centre. Though technically in Cabramatta, it is nearby. It offers a fitness center, pool, and meeting rooms. Parks like Sherwin Park, Parkes Reserve, Johnston Park, and Cook Park provide green spaces.
