The CBSA’s mandate is broad. It handles border control immigration enforcement and customs services. The agency is responsible to Parliament. It works closely with Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada. The CBSA enforces immigration laws. It removes inadmissible individuals from the country. It assists local police in investigating violations of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
A lesser-known fact is the CBSA’s Inland Enforcement branch. This branch tracks down and removes foreign nationals illegally in Canada. The CBSA also operates immigration holding centres. These are in Laval Quebec Toronto Ontario and Surrey British Columbia. These centres hold individuals pending immigration decisions or deportation. The CBSA’s role extends beyond just the border crossings. It also oversees mail centres and major seaports.
Initially CBSA officers were unarmed. This changed in 2006 with the CBSA Arming Initiative. This ten-year plan armed and trained Border Services Officers. A deal was reached between the workers and the Canadian government. The CBSA plays a vital role in Canada’s security and economy.
