Gazing upon Canaan Church, have you ever pondered its humble beginnings? Canaan Church began not in this grand structure, but as a small home Bible study group in 1990. Seven families gathered, sharing their faith and prayers. They soon blossomed into a larger congregation, holding Sunday evening services at Eagle Ridge Bible Fellowship starting April 7, 1991. Around ten families attended these early services. As new immigrant families joined, the growing Canaan Church relocated to Eagle Ridge United Church for Sunday afternoon services in February 1992. Under the guidance of Reverend and Mrs. Moses Cheng, the church thrived. Members nurtured new believers and trained disciples. By 1994, Canaan Church became independent, both financially and administratively. The church’s activities expanded, outgrowing their rented space. They faced limitations and inconveniences. To better serve the community, the congregation recognized the need for their own building. Their prayers were answered in September 1998. They secured property at 3425-3437 Coast Meridian Road in Port Coquitlam. The path to building Canaan Church was not easy. Obstacles delayed the project, but eventually, they received approval. The project, including land, building, and furnishings, was estimated at CAD$1,700,000. While facing a significant shortfall in funds, the congregation remained steadfast in their faith. They saw the project through, experiencing firsthand the power of giving. This new Canaan Church building stands as a testament to their dedication and perseverance, providing a place for worship, discipleship training, and fellowship.
