Nestled between grand palazzi, Campo Sant’Anzolo whispers tales of Venice’s vibrant past. Campo Sant’Anzolo isn’t just a square. It’s a stage where centuries of history have played out. Once, the Church of San Michele Arcangelo graced this very spot. Its presence dominated the campo, a spiritual heart for the community. But the Napoleonic era brought change, and the church was demolished in the early 19th century. Only its name, echoed in the campo, remains. Today, the square is a peaceful haven, surrounded by architectural gems. Palazzo Trevisan Pisani stands proudly on one side. It first belonged to the Trevisan family, later passing to the Pisani family. Nearby, Palazzo Gritti, also known as Palazzo Gritti Morosini, boasts its 16th-century origins. On the eastern side, Palazzo Duodo a Sant’Angelo tells the story of the Duodo family. They commissioned its construction in the 15th century. Later, it became home to the Zen family for over a century. Two 15th-century wells, nestled between Palazzo Gritti and Palazzo Duodo, offer a glimpse into the campo’s daily life. Campo Sant’Anzolo also holds a hidden treasure: the Oratory of the Annunciation. This small, unassuming building boasts ancient origins. The southwestern side of Campo Sant’Anzolo reveals another historical layer. Here, the back wall of the Monastery of Santo Stefano rises, a silent witness to centuries of monastic life. Its ogival portal, adorned with a bas-relief of Saint Augustine, beckons you to cross the bridge to Campo Santo Stefano. Campo Sant’Anzolo is more than just stones and mortar. It’s a living testament to Venice’s rich tapestry of history, architecture, and human stories. It invites you to pause, to imagine the echoes of the past, and to appreciate the beauty of the present.
