Here at Campbelltown City Council, you stand at the heart of a community with a rich past and an exciting future. Campbelltown wasn’t always the bustling city it is today.
Let’s step back in time. In 1820, Governor Lachlan Macquarie named this area Campbell Town. He named it in honor of his wife Elizabeth Campbell. Over time, the name evolved to the simpler Campbelltown.
The Campbelltown City Council itself was officially established in 1882. It was proclaimed as the Municipal District of Campbelltown. John Ahearn became the first Mayor. The council back then was made up of nine Aldermen.
The nearby Municipal District of Ingleburn joined Campbelltown later. This happened in 1948. They became the Amalgamated Municipality of Campbelltown. This joining was part of a bigger plan. The plan was to make local governments more organized after World War II.
A significant moment arrived in 1968. Campbelltown was officially proclaimed a city. This marked its transformation from a rural center to a satellite city. Electric trains from Sydney arrived on the very same day. This connected Campbelltown to the wider region.
Campbelltown has seen considerable growth since then. In 1966, there were only 25000 residents. Today, there are more than 150000. Campbelltown City Council now employs over 900 people to serve this growing community.
The Campbelltown City Council has a coat of arms. It was first used in 1969. The design is based on the Campbell family arms from Airds in Scotland. This is where the name Campbelltown originates. The shield features green and gold. These colors symbolize Campbelltown’s rural past. Sheaths of wheat and fleece remind us of the early grazing and wheat farming industries. A red crown in the center represents the council’s civic authority. Above the shield, a white swan rises from a wreath. A horn overflowing with fruit signifies the produce of the Ingleburn region. Golden animals are also displayed to emphasize the wool and grazing industry heritage. The Campbell motto, “Be mindful”, sits beneath the emblem.
The city’s badge is simpler. It is an easy to recognize version of the coat of arms. It was used on official items until 2001. Today, the coat of arms is reserved for special occasions.
In 2019, Campbelltown launched a new city identity. This identity captures the community’s energy. It highlights the people and opportunities that define Campbelltown.
The community played a big role in creating this new image. Locals, business owners, and council staff worked together. They built upon the city’s history. They embedded a new narrative for Campbelltown.
