Here at Campbells Ford, imagine Sydney in the early 1800s. Robert Campbell, a pioneering merchant from Scotland, arrived here. He quickly became a key figure in transforming the penal settlement into a thriving colony.

Campbells Ford is named after Robert Campbell. He wasn’t just any merchant. Campbell was a visionary who understood the potential of this new land.

In 1797, Campbell demonstrated his foresight. He dispatched a vessel named Sydney Cove from Calcutta, laden with goods. The ship met an unfortunate end in Bass Strait. Fortunately, the crew and much of the cargo were saved.

The success of this venture encouraged Campbell to establish a branch of his company in Sydney. He set up residence at Dawes Point, known today as The Rocks.

Campbells influence quickly grew. He constructed a private wharf, Campbells Wharf. It still stands north of the Overseas Passenger Ship Terminal. Campbell also established bond warehouses at The Rocks, which are still standing today.

He owned and operated his own ships. This gave him a significant advantage in the import trade. Campbell became a vital government contractor. He supplied essential goods to the growing colony.

His fair trading practices earned him respect. Small settlers, officers, and even the governor appreciated his generous credit terms. A memorial from 200 settlers in 1804 expressed their gratitude. It stated that Campbell saved them from avarice and extortion.

Campbell fostered close relationships with influential figures. These included Sir Joseph Banks, Governor William Bligh, and Samuel Marsden.

In 1807, Campbell established Australia’s first shipbuilding yards at Kirribilli. He built his own sailing ships there. The brig Perseverance was one of them.

Governor Bligh appointed him treasurer, naval officer, and collector of taxes. Campbell’s influence permeated all levels of colonial administration.

One of Campbells ships discovered Campbell Island. It is located south of New Zealand. The island became a rich source of seal skins and oils. Sadly, sealers quickly depleted its resources.

Campbell’s contributions extended to politics. He was appointed to the first New South Wales Legislative Council in 1825.

For his services, Campbell received 4,000 acres of land. This land became the site of Canberra. Robert Campbell built Duntroon homestead there. It was named after his ancestral Duntrune Castle in Scotland. Today, a suburb of Canberra bears his name.

In the 1830s and 1840s, Campbell expanded his land holdings. He established squatter sheep farms in New South Wales and Victoria.

Robert Campbell died in 1846. He left behind a legacy as a pioneering merchant, shipper, trader, landowner, pastoralist, philanthropist, and politician. His impact on the development of Sydney and Australia is undeniable.

Campbells Stores, a heritage-listed building, stands as a testament to his legacy. Built between 1850 and 1861, these stores once served as warehouses. They are now tourist-oriented restaurants and bars.

As you stand here at Campbells Ford, remember Robert Campbell. He helped shape this city. He transformed a penal colony into a thriving hub of commerce and culture.
