Tucked away in Great Falls Virginia lies Camp Fraser a hidden gem. It’s more than just a camp. It’s a 76-acre woodland sanctuary. Surrounding it is the even larger Fraser Preserve a 220-acre expanse managed by the Nature Conservancy.

Camp Fraser is a unique collaboration. It’s owned by Calvary Baptist Church. However it’s managed and programmed by Living Classrooms of the National Capital Region. Their partnership uses Camp Fraser’s natural resources to educate DC-area students. They offer hands-on environmental education programs summer camps and adventure activities.

Imagine children exploring a deciduous forest learning about forest life cycles. They learn about the animals that call it home. They discover ponds rivers and watersheds conducting water quality tests. The staff are trained in environmental science and outdoor education ensuring safety and knowledge. Camp Fraser even boasts a high ropes course a climbing wall and team-building activities.

The Camp Fraser lodge itself is remarkable. It can accommodate indoor meetings for up to 100 people. A commercial kitchen makes catering events easy. There’s a multi-purpose room and dormitory rooms with bunk beds sleeping up to 48 overnight guests.

Beyond the lodge lies the Fraser Preserve. It features 2.25 miles of hiking trails. These trails provide an immersive experience in the Piedmont region’s ecosystems. The trails connect to the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority offering extended hiking possibilities. The preserve is alive with wildlife. Deer wild turkeys foxes squirrels raccoons bats and chipmunks roam freely. Various species of turtles amphibians and birds add to the biodiversity. Over 300 species of wildflowers thrive here. Some notable examples are the yellow adder’s tongue purple cress marsh marigold and the sassafras tree.
