Whispers of a two-headed serpent greet you at Camosun Bog. This isn’t just any bog. It’s a place steeped in history a living testament to resilience.
For millennia Camosun Bog x̓mələq̓əm has been integral to the Musqueam people. It provided sustenance medicine and materials for trade. Ancient stories speak of s̓iʔəq̓əy a two-headed serpent that shaped the bog’s landscape. Children were warned to stay away lest they be taken by this mythical creature. The sacred plant məθk̓əy is said to have sprung from its droppings. This is the rich cultural heritage woven into the very fabric of Camosun Bog.
The bog itself is a marvel of nature. A peatland over 2000 years old. Its creation began when glacial ice receded leaving a depression that filled with water and vegetation. Gradually it transformed into a swamp and eventually into the bog we see today. The slow decay of sphagnum moss creates peat a unique carbon sink vital in combating climate change. Peat accumulates at a rate of approximately one meter every 400 years. Each layer holds secrets. Each layer tells a story of Camosun Bog.
Sadly human activity nearly destroyed this treasure. Drains installed in 1929 lowered the water table. Invasive species crowded out native plants. Construction fill in 1972 added to the damage. The bog was on the brink of collapse.
Then came the heroes. In 1992 the Camosun Bog Restoration Group formed. These dedicated individuals began the painstaking process of revival. They removed nutrient-rich soil replanted native species and monitored water levels. Slowly but surely Camosun Bog began to heal.
Today you walk among the restored splendor. Boardwalks wind through the landscape offering intimate views of the bog’s inhabitants. Birds and squirrels flit through the trees. The air hums with the sounds of nature. Here you can see the results of community efforts the power of perseverance.
Camosun Bog is more than just a bog. It’s a lesson in history a testament to the resilience of nature and the unwavering spirit of those who fought to save it. Take a moment to breathe in the fresh air to appreciate this ancient wonder. You are standing on sacred ground. You are standing in a place where legend and reality intertwine.
