Originally known as Estelville Cameron Park boasts a rich history. Named after local politician John Estell it was first subdivided in 1905. The land was owned by various entities including the Lake Macquarie City Council. A major development plan transformed the area. This involved 1700 homes a primary and high school and a shopping centre. The name change to Cameron Park happened because of a nearby speedway. The speedway itself was named after Ian Cameron a founder of Australian speedway racing. A poll of residents showed overwhelming support for the name change. Only a tiny fraction 1.4% favored keeping the name Estelville. Other names were considered including Oakwood and Pambulong. Pambulong was suggested by Tyneside Property Management. They were developing an industrial park in the area. The Awabakal Indigenous Australians who lived nearby suggested the name. The Geographical Names Board of New South Wales approved the new name in 2001. Construction of the planned homes began soon after. A shopping center was approved in 2005. It would include a Woolworths supermarket and a Harrigan’s Irish pub. Construction finally started in 2016. However the promised schools haven’t been built yet. Today Cameron Park is a thriving suburb. It features a go-kart circuit hosting national events. It’s a testament to a community’s vision and growth. The transformation from Estelville to Cameron Park is a unique story. It reveals the interplay between development planning local sentiment and historical context. So next time you visit remember this fascinating story. Cameron Park has more than meets the eye. It reflects the evolution of a suburb. It combines community spirit and its journey over a century.
