Did you know that Calvary Road Baptist Church started as Beulah Baptist Church in 1870? The church adopted its covenant that November. Later in March 1957 the church was reorganized. It wasn’t until November 1971 that it officially became Calvary Road Baptist Church.
Now imagine it’s June 1979. New Life Baptist Church merges with Calvary Road Baptist Church. Pastor David M. Rhodenhizer leads the unified congregation. The theme was “Two Like Spirits One Great Vision.” Soon it was “One Like Spirit One Great Vision.”
Pastor Rhodenhizer encouraged the church to reach out. They wanted to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with their neighbors. Despite being deep in debt with dwindling attendance the church saw growth. Through good financial management Calvary Road Baptist Church became debt-free.
In 1986 they broke ground. Construction began on an extension of the sanctuary and additional Sunday School rooms. A dedication service was held in 1986 after completion of the space. It was completed without incurring any debt.
Over the years Calvary Road Baptist Church purchased four additional properties. In 1997 the bus garage was converted into a Student Center. In 2005 they constructed a new parking lot. They also configured some property. Additionally they added the infrastructure for a new educational building and worship center.
Calvary Road Baptist Church has always served its neighborhood. It has done so with a Christian school. The church also had an annual Christmas in Kingstowne presentation. Calvary Road has launched six churches.
But Calvary Road has never lost its passion. They continue to reach the neighborhood. They reach the community the state and the country. Calvary Road Baptist Church even ministers to many nations with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
At Calvary Road Baptist Church they don’t say “Welcome to Church.” They prefer “Welcome Home.” The church offers worship services at 9:30 AM and 11:00 AM. There is also an extensive list of Bible Classes. These classes are available at 8:00 AM 9:30 AM and 11:00 AM.
Calvary Road provides select offerings for various age groups. This includes Early Childhood Elementary Junior High and High School ministries. They also have active Women’s and Men’s Ministries. These ministries complement spiritual growth.
Pastor Dave grew up in Lynchburg Virginia. He accepted Jesus at age 14 at Thomas Road Baptist Church. Dr Jerry Falwell was the pastor there. In 1974 he graduated from Lynchburg Baptist College now Liberty University. In August 1977 God led him to start a church in Northern Virginia. He and his family moved to Alexandria. There they began New Life Baptist Church.
Today Calvary Road Baptist Church continues its mission. It welcomes people to connect with God and each other. It offers various ministries and outreach programs. The church strives to be a home for all who seek spiritual growth and community.
