The first Calvary Cemetery wasn’t here. It stood at the upper end of Eternity Street. This original cemetery nestled between a creek and the Zanja Madre. This area was then a tranquil setting. It was ideal for funeral processions. Important figures of early Los Angeles found their final resting place here. General Andrés Pico the hero of the Battle of San Pascual is one example. Another is Don Abel Stearns a prominent rancher. This original Calvary Cemetery’s chapel remains. It has been repurposed as St Peter’s Italian Catholic Church.
As Los Angeles grew so did the need for a larger cemetery. The current Calvary Cemetery across the Los Angeles River opened in 1896. This expansive 137-acre site is where we stand today. It’s a testament to the enduring faith of the community. A beautiful All Souls Chapel was built in 1902. It was designed as a replica of a church in England. The chapel was an incredibly popular place of worship.
Over the years more structures rose on the hallowed grounds. The Main Mausoleum with its own chapel was constructed in 1936. Additional mausoleums Our Lady’s Garden and Gethsemane were also added. Today daily Mass is still offered in the Main Mausoleum chapel. The cemetery holds the remains of many notable individuals. Among them are actors actresses and film producers.
