In 1942 a new prison opened. It was the first prison in Sao Paulo specifically for women. This was the Cadeia Publica Feminina. Located in a building next to the existing State Penitentiary it was initially run by Catholic nuns. The nuns belonged to the Congregation of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd of Angers.

The Cadeia Publica Feminina has a significant history. It wasn’t just a place of confinement. During the military dictatorship the prison held political prisoners.
