Could a train station become a community hub? Here at the former Bubeneč railway station, the answer is a resounding yes. This building, once a bustling hub for travelers on the Prague-Děčín line, has undergone a remarkable transformation. Let’s step back in time to 1850. The station opened its doors, a testament to the vision of architect Antonín Jüngling. His design, a single-story building with a low pitched roof, echoed other stations along the Northern State Railway. This station quickly became a vital part of Bubeneč, connecting the community to the wider world. Over the years, it witnessed the ebb and flow of passengers, the arrival and departure of steam engines and later electric trains. In 1899, the station expanded, gaining two lower wings that framed the original square structure. A covered platform provided shelter for waiting passengers while two other, less glamorous platforms braved the elements. A bustling station restaurant, complete with a takeaway window facing Goetheho Street, offered refreshments to weary travelers. The station served the community faithfully until 2014. With the opening of the new Praha-Podbaba station, the Bubeneč station’s role in passenger transport came to an end. However, the story doesn’t end there. Recognized as a cultural monument in 2013, the building was purchased by Prague 6 in 2018. A vision for its future began to take shape. A competition was held, and a winning proposal emerged, promising a new chapter for the former station. In 2023, renovations began, transforming the station into a vibrant community center. Fast forward to 2024. Ten years after the last passenger train departed, the former Bubeneč railway station reopened as Stanice 6. The building now houses a gallery, a café, and even a sports equipment rental. The former platforms, once echoing with the sound of train whistles, now offer a tranquil outdoor space. The station’s transformation is a testament to the power of community vision and adaptive reuse. From a railway hub to a community heart, the former Bubeneč station continues to serve the neighborhood, connecting people in new and meaningful ways.
