“Can you imagine the sweet scent of sugar beet filling the air?” Right here, in front of us, once stood the bustling heart of Býv. cukrovar Urbánek & Wágner v Modřanech, the Modřany Sugar Refinery. For over a century, this factory dominated the landscape, its iconic chimney a testament to the industrial might that once thrived in this area. Established in 1861, the Býv. cukrovar Urbánek & Wágner v Modřanech played a pivotal role in Modřany’s growth. It wasn’t just sugar that flowed from its gates; this factory was a hive of activity, producing coffee cubes, jams, lemonades, and even sodas. The rhythmic clang of machinery and the shouts of workers once filled the air where we stand now. Although the factory ceased operations in 2002 and was largely demolished in 2005, its legacy lives on.
