Was it a prison or a pub? Let’s unravel the captivating tale of Bysis. Here we stand before a building steeped in history. Bysis stands on Hornsgatan 82. It served as Stockholm’s debtor’s prison. That was from 1782 to 1872. Imagine people confined here. They struggled to pay their debts.

Bysis, or Bysättningshäktet, translates to “Debtor’s Prison.” In everyday speech, locals simply called it “Bysis.” The building initially resided within the Royal Palace’s north wing. It faced the outer courtyard. In 1782, it moved to this location on Hornsgatan. This area is in Södermalm.

Fast forward to the 20th century. Bysis transformed into something quite different. It became a well-known tavern. In fact, it’s one of Stockholm’s oldest. Can you imagine the stories within these walls? From confinement to celebration, Bysis has seen it all.

The Stockholm City Museum recognizes Bysis’s cultural value. It’s designated as a building of “blue” classification. This means its historical significance nearly qualifies it as a listed building. The building stands as a testament to time.

Once, a tram rattled past the Bysis. That was back in 1923. Waldén captured that moment in a photograph. Today, you’re more likely to see cars. Hornsgatan is still a busy street.

If you were to step inside Bysis today, you might expect prison bars. But that’s not the case at all. You would have found Bysis Bistro. It served Italian and Swedish cuisine. The interior featured traditional brickwork. Carpaccio and tiramisu were on the menu. So were grilled Swedish sirloin and seafood soup. Sadly, Bysis Bistro has permanently closed.

Bysis has witnessed many changes. It has transformed from a place of hardship to a place of enjoyment. The walls of Bysis could tell so many stories. They echo with the past. So remember Bysis. It’s more than just a building. It’s a symbol of transformation. It’s a reminder of Stockholm’s rich history.
