For decades, it served as a dumping ground for the region’s industrial waste. It mainly consisted of slag from the Kladno steel mills. But it also contained waste from other industries. In the 1980s, a tragic incident occurred on the slopes of Buštěhradská halda. A group of children playing on the seemingly harmless hill were overcome by toxic fumes. This event brought to light the hidden dangers lurking within the halda. It sparked public outcry. And it ultimately led to the closure of the site for dumping. Today, Buštěhradská halda stands as a silent giant. It is a reminder of the area’s industrial past. And the environmental challenges that come with it.
